When adding on a Room Addition to a single-family home it is necessary to become aware of the related guidelines and requirements and obtaining the required building permits. Depending on the situation, an Additional Room needs approval and may be required from the City’s Planning Division before the Building & Development Services Division can issue a building permit for the project.

Process Guide:

Determine Zoning:
Before developing a parcel of land, you will need to determine if your property is zoned for your desired use or if there are any special development considerations for your project.

The Planning Division will be able to tell you the zoning of the property or if there are any special considerations for your project. If your project requires special handling, our staff will inform you of the requirements and next steps.

Submit Building Plans Helpful Documents and Applications:

Building Plans are reviewed to ensure that construction meets minimum life safety requirements. Depending upon the type of project and the complexity of construction, staff or our outside consultant will examine your plans for conformance to these requirements.

What to include:
  • 1 Building Permit Application
  • 3 sets of complete building plans
  • 2 sets of Title 24 State Energy forms (as applicable)
  • 2 sets of structural calculations (as applicable)
  • 2 sets of truss calculations (if applicable)
  • 2 soils report (if 2 story or over 1,000 sq. ft)
Pay Fees:
You will be required to pay a Plan Check Fee at this time. Staff will inform you of the amount at the time you submit your building plans. 

Once your plans are approved, you will need to pay for any plan review costs, building permits or other fees that may apply to your project.
