The Temecula Police Department Traffic Team is composed of 12 motorcycle officers and 6 accident investigators. The team is responsible for neighborhood enforcement of traffic violations, red light violators and active DUI enforcement to name a few programs. The team is led by Sergeant Jon Anderson, a twenty-one year law enforcement veteran and Sergeant Eric Albert a twenty-five year law enforcement veteran.
The traffic team takes an aggressive stance on reducing collisions and getting impaired drivers off our roadways. They conduct driving under the influence (DUI) checkpoints and DUI saturation patrols to combat these drivers. Traffic officers are highly visible in our community, enforcing state and local laws, and acting as a deterrent to speeding and red light violations. The traffic division also actively enforces the seatbelt requirements of the State of California.
The traffic division is also responsible for investigating traffic collisions within the city. Part of the investigation requires careful analysis about why the accident occurred, thus allowing officers to identify reckless drivers or poor road conditions, which may further impact whether future accidents occur. Their overall efforts paid off as the city has seen a % reduction in traffic collisions in 2006.
The California Office of Traffic Safety awarded the traffic team $142,177.00 in grant funding in 2006 to be used toward education and enforcement. The grant allowed the team to purchase equipment such as computers and related software to allow the officers to work more efficiently in identifying trends and traffic issues. The grant also funded extra DUI checkpoints, DUI and seatbelt saturation patrols, car seat clinics, and programs aimed at keeping our community safe.
The Traffic is expected to add 2 Community Services Officers, sometime in the Summer of 2007 to assist with accident investigations and parking enforcement
